Organizing Director (Paid Contract Position)

Finding Home ATXAustin, TX

About Finding Home ATX

Finding Home ATX (FHATX) is an innovative coalition of business, government, social service providers, philanthropists and people with lived experience established in May 2020 following the Summit on Unsheltered Homelessness. The goals identified in the Summit Plan were to house an additional 3,000 unsheltered individuals, identify 1000 units of permanent supportive housing, secure 2,300 rental units and create a more effective Homeless Response System by fortifying provider capacity.

FHATX’s vision is to strengthen Austin’s ability to address the homelessness crisis through collaboration and capacity building by leveraging the expertise and compassion of partners to advance the comprehensive homelessness response system plan. FHATX collaborates with community members, social services, policy advocates, and individuals with lived experience to identify and track philanthropic investments that address the critical needs and gaps outlined in the Summit Plan. We promote equity, leverage data, and achieve measurable outcomes as we work with partners to transform Austin’s homeless response system.

At the request of the Austin City Council, FHATX is working to identify and support the direction of $100 million in new philanthropic funding to support nonprofit organizations within the homeless response network. The identified dollars would flow directly from the philanthropies to the nonprofits who are part of the homeless response system.

Additionally, FHATX secures funding to support its operational needs, allowing it to consistently monitor and report on progress, advocate for the goals of the Summit, and collaborate with the philanthropic community to make strategic investments. These efforts aim to close service gaps and strengthen Austin’s homeless response system, creating a more robust and effective pathway toward addressing homelessness.

The Opportunity

The Organizing Director will play a vital leadership role in catalyzing collective action to address homelessness across Central Texas. As the strategic engine behind Finding Home ATX’s communications, organizing, and fundraising efforts, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape and amplify a unified community response to homelessness. The Organizing Director will work closely with a collaborative Leadership Group composed of the Downtown Austin Alliance, ECHO (Ending Community Homelessness Coalition), the City of Austin, Travis County, and a range of private and nonprofit partners. Together, they have coalesced around a shared goal: to create an equitable, data-driven, and lasting response to homelessness in Austin and across Travis, Williamson, and Bastrop counties. This is a rare chance to guide a regional coalition that has channeled over $465 million in investments toward transformative impact—an infrastructure poised for renewed leadership and strategic direction.

Finding Home ATX operates not as a standalone nonprofit, but as a powerful coalition and convener within the Central Texas homelessness response ecosystem. It is uniquely positioned to be the voice that builds donor confidence, directing resources toward strategies that reflect the lived experience of the community and the realities on the ground. In this critical political moment—both at the state and federal levels—Finding Home ATX is poised to reemerge as a leader in the homelessness space, filling a growing leadership void with clarity, coordination, and moral authority. The Organizing Director will help shape this narrative, fostering trust with funders and aligning diverse stakeholders around a shared plan of action that moves beyond fragmentation toward collective impact.

At the heart of this role is the opportunity to bring simplicity and strength to how the coalition communicates its vision and impact. The Organizing Director will be responsible for crafting a clear messaging framework that makes it easy for partners, donors, and the public to understand who Finding Home ATX supports, why their work matters, and how they are uniquely positioned to lead. This includes developing a strategic plan that articulates the coalition’s goals in a way that is transparent, inclusive, and rooted in community needs.

This part-time, flexible contract role is ideal for a respected Austin leader with a deep understanding of systems change, political dynamics, and the power of collaborative strategy—someone ready to shape the next chapter of homelessness response in Central Texas.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Leadership and Development:

  • Collaborate with the FHATX Leadership Group to assess progress to date and co-develop refreshed strategies that advance the coalition’s mission and objectives.
  • Lead the implementation and day-to-day project management of strategic initiatives, ensuring clear coordination among stakeholders and alignment in messaging and actions across the homelessness response system.
  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of strategies through data analysis, partner feedback, and community input, providing regular updates to the Leadership Group and refining approaches to maximize impact.

Resource Mobilizing:

Design and execute a comprehensive resource mobilization strategy aligned with FHATX’s long-term goals and the broader vision outlined in the 2024 State of the Homelessness Response System report. Developed by ECHO in collaboration with the City of Austin and Travis County, this plan underscores the importance of equity, coordination, and data-driven decision-making in addressing homelessness.

  • Strategic Philanthropic Alignment: Develop a fundraising framework that supports shared community priorities—such as the expansion of Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) and Rapid Re-Housing (RRH), reduction of racial disparities, and improved system coordination. Identify key donor segments and establish clear metrics to track alignment and impact.
  • Donor Engagement and Stewardship: Cultivate meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors through transparent, customized outreach. Highlight FHATX’s work within the context of community-wide goals, including the addition of 1,000 PSH units and the transition to a new Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), to connect donors with high-impact opportunities.
  • Impact Evaluation and Learning: Measure the outcomes of fundraising efforts in driving systemic change. Share timely, insight-driven updates with the Leadership Group to refine strategy, strengthen donor confidence, and ensure resources are effectively deployed to meet urgent community needs.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Foster strong partnerships with a diverse range of community stakeholders—including government entities, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals with lived experience—to advance collective goals within the homelessness response system.
  • Serve as a connector across sectors, building trusted relationships with social service providers, advocacy groups, and local leaders to promote collaboration and drive aligned action.
  • Oversee the implementation of FHATX’s communications plan, including managing media engagement and serving as a primary spokesperson for public-facing efforts.

Ideal Candidate

First and foremost, the ideal candidate is a passionate and principled leader committed to fostering a cohesive and effective homelessness response system in Austin. This role is a unique opportunity for a respected and experienced community leader seeking a high-impact, yet flexible commitment. The Organizing Director brings not only a deep understanding of the local landscape, but also a healing presence—someone who offers steadiness and clarity during moments of transition or challenge.

The ideal candidate has demonstrated leadership in homelessness, poverty, or related systems that affect Austinites. They are a respected bridge builder who can connect diverse stakeholders—policymakers, funders, nonprofit leaders, and community members—toward a shared vision. A gifted communicator and storyteller, this individual can synthesize complex issues and speak with clarity and conviction across varied audiences. They lead with empathy and emotional intelligence, rallying support through both logic and inspiration. Strategic and entrepreneurial in spirit, they are proactive, self-directed, and comfortable navigating ambiguity. With strong project management skills, the next Organizing Director will be able to balance multiple priorities while keeping the coalition aligned and moving forward.
